How to Split PDF Files: Extract Pages or Break Into Parts

Decide what kind of split you need

The word “split” covers three different results. Pick one before choosing a method, because the built-in options on most systems only handle the first.

• Extract pages: you want one new PDF containing, say, pages 4 to 7 of a bank statement.
• Split by ranges: you want several PDFs, for example chapters 1–20, 21–45 and 46–80.
• Burst: you want every page saved as its own PDF, typical for scanned batches of invoices.

What is the easiest way to split a PDF for free?

For a single extract, print the page range to a new PDF, which every system can do. For several ranges or one file per page, a browser splitter that works on the device is far quicker, and it keeps the links and selectable text that printing can throw away.

Split a PDF in any browser, without uploading

Split PDF on this site handles all three cases on Windows, Mac, Chromebook, iPhone and Android. The file is processed in the browser, so it works for confidential files too, and PDFs up to 200 MB are accepted.

• Open Split PDF and choose the file. Page thumbnails appear so you can see what is where.
• Type ranges such as 1-3, 5, 8-10, pick a fixed number of pages per file, or switch to Extract pages and tap thumbnails to pick pages visually.
• Check the badges on the thumbnails. They show which output file each page will end up in, so mistakes are easy to spot before you start.
• Press Split and download. A single result arrives as a PDF; several results can be downloaded one by one or as a single ZIP, so your browser does not ask about each file.

Windows: print to PDF

Windows has no split command, but Windows 10 and 11 include a PDF printer. Open the PDF in Microsoft Edge or Chrome, press Ctrl+P, choose Microsoft Print to PDF (in Edge) or Save as PDF (in Chrome) as the printer, and set Pages to a custom range like 4-7. Click Print or Save and name the new file.

This works for simple extractions, but printing rebuilds the document: bookmarks, links and form fields are lost, and repeating it for many ranges is tedious. Filled-in form values are printed as flat text, which is sometimes exactly what you want and sometimes not. Set Scale to 100% or Actual size, otherwise the browser may shrink each page to add printer margins.

Mac: drag pages out of Preview

Open the PDF in Preview and choose View > Thumbnails. Select the pages you want (Cmd-click for several, Shift-click for a run) and drag them onto the desktop. Preview creates a new PDF containing just those pages. To split into parts, repeat with each range. The Preview User Guide from Apple covers the thumbnail sidebar in detail.

Alternatively, choose File > Print, set a page range, open the PDF menu at the bottom of the dialog and choose Save as PDF. Dragging is the better of the two, since it copies pages as they are, while printing rebuilds them.

iPhone, iPad and Android

On iPhone and iPad, the Files app cannot extract a range directly, but the print trick works: open the PDF, tap Share > Print, set the page range under Range, then spread two fingers on the preview and use Share > Save to Files.

On Android, open the PDF in the Google Drive viewer or Chrome, tap the three-dot menu > Print, choose Save as PDF as the printer, and change Pages from All to a range such as 4-7. Tap the PDF button and pick a folder.

Both are fine for one extract. For more than one range, or to split every page, the browser tool is much faster than repeating that process, and it works the same on both systems.

Does splitting a PDF reduce quality?

No, as long as the pages are copied and not re-printed. A proper splitter moves each page's text, fonts and images into the new file unchanged, so a 2 MB page stays 2 MB and looks identical.

Print-based methods are different. They redraw the page through a printer driver, which can downsample images, flatten transparency and occasionally turn text into pictures. If the extract is for an official submission, compare a detailed page in both files at 200% zoom before sending.

Why are the split files bigger than expected?

Because every part must carry its own copy of shared resources. A PDF stores a font or a logo once and lets every page point to it, a structure described on Wikipedia's PDF page. Split a 10 MB file into five parts and each needs the fonts, so the parts may add up to 11 or 12 MB.

If the parts are still too large for an upload form or an email, run them through Compress PDF afterwards. Scanned pages in particular shrink a lot, since each page is one large image.

Tips for splitting large files

• Check the page numbers you type against the thumbnails. The number printed in the footer often differs from the real page position because of covers and roman-numeral front matter. Page “1” of a report is frequently the fifth page of the file.
• Ranges count positions in the file, starting at 1, regardless of any page labels the author defined.
• If the PDF is password-protected, you need the password to open it. The tool asks for it and uses it only on your device. To drop the password from the parts, run the original through Unlock PDF first; it needs the password and does not crack files.
• On a phone, very large scans can run the browser tab out of memory. Split on a laptop if a 150 MB file fails on mobile, or split it in two halves first.
• Name the parts straight away. “statement-split-2.pdf” means nothing a month later.

When should you not split at all?

If you want to keep most of the document and just drop a handful of pages, such as blank scans or an appendix, Remove Pages is quicker: tap the pages to delete and download the rest as one file. If you want to reorder pages at the same time, Organize PDF lets you drag, rotate and delete in one pass.

Do not split to hide information, either. Sending pages 1 to 3 of a contract is fine, but if a page you do send contains a figure that must stay private, the right tool is Redact PDF. And if you split only to get under an email limit, try compression first: one attachment is easier for the recipient than four. When parts need to come back together later, Merge PDF joins them in any order.
