Can a PDF be unlocked without the password?

Only if the PDF already opens without asking for one: a file locked with a user (open) password cannot be decrypted without that password, and this tool does not guess, crack or brute-force passwords. The password is the input from which the decryption key is derived, so without it the page content is unreadable ciphertext for any software.

Files that open freely but block printing or copying are a different case. They are encrypted with a key derived from an empty user password, which is why every reader can display them without asking. Any PDF library can therefore decrypt them, and the qpdf manual documents the same behaviour for its decrypt option. For those files the tool needs no password and saves a copy with no encryption and no restrictions.

What is the difference between a user password and an owner password?

A user password (the open password) must be typed before a reader shows a single page, while an owner password lets the file open normally and only restricts printing, copying text, editing or form filling. The first is enforced by cryptography; the second is a set of permission flags that reader apps agree to honour.

This tool handles both. With a user password, enter it and a decrypted copy is saved. With owner restrictions only, the copy is saved without encryption and every restriction disappears. Before anything is unlocked, the tool reports which kind of protection it found and which actions were blocked, and it asks for confirmation that the file is yours or that you have permission to remove its protection.

Which PDF encryption types can be unlocked?

Every password-based method in the PDF standard can be unlocked when the password is known: RC4 40-bit, RC4 128-bit, AES-128 and AES-256. AES-256 is the method defined in PDF 2.0, published as ISO 32000-2, which deprecates the older RC4 and AES-128 handlers. AES itself is the block cipher specified in FIPS 197 (AES); RC4 is an older stream cipher that is no longer considered secure.

Only the standard password security handler is supported. PDFs secured with a certificate (public-key security) are tied to a private key rather than a password, and documents protected by DRM systems such as FileOpen or Adobe rights management check with a licence server before opening. Neither kind can be unlocked here, and the tool stops with an error instead of producing a broken file.

How does Unlock PDF remove the password?

The PDF is opened in the browser with the password you enter, every string and stream is decrypted, and a new copy is written without an encryption dictionary. Before the download is offered, the saved bytes are opened again with no password as a self-check: the copy must load, must carry no encryption entry and must have the same page count as the original, so a file that is still locked never reaches the download step.

Why remove a password from a PDF?

The usual reason is convenience with files that are already yours: typing a password every time gets tedious for statements and payslips that live in a private archive. Many tools also refuse encrypted files outright, including merging, compressing, OCR and e-signature services. Removing the protection from your copy first makes those jobs possible, and a password can be added back afterwards with Protect PDF.

Restrictions are also a common nuisance on forms and brochures where the author simply left the default security settings on. The result is a form that is meant to be filled in but cannot be printed, or a letter whose address cannot be copied. Unlocking produces a normal PDF that works in Merge PDF, Compress PDF and every other reader or editor.

What can Unlock PDF not do?

It cannot recover a lost password. If the password to your own file is gone, check the email the document arrived with (bank and payroll PDFs often use a date of birth or part of an account number), look in your password manager, or ask the sender for an unprotected copy.

An unlocked copy of a digitally signed PDF no longer carries a valid signature, because the file has been rewritten, so keep the signed original alongside the unlocked copy if the signature matters. Files up to 200 MB are supported, and very large scans can be slow on older phones because the whole document is decrypted in memory.
