It is tiresome when you need to upload the statement to a mortgage portal that cannot read encrypted files, or when you want to archive ten years of payslips without typing a password each time. If you know the password, removing it takes seconds. If you do not, no honest tool can help, and this guide explains why.
Can you remove a PDF password without knowing it?
Not from a PDF that asks for a password to open. That file is encrypted, and the password is needed to decrypt it. Restrictions on printing or copying are different and can be lifted without a password.

If you lost the password to your own file
Check the email the PDF came with, and the sender's help pages. Most banks and payroll providers explain their format: a date of birth as DDMMYYYY, the last digits of an account number, a postcode without spaces, or a combination. Windows and Chromebook: Chrome or Edge
Open the PDF in Chrome or Edge and enter the password. Press Ctrl+P and choose Save as PDF in Chrome, or Microsoft Print to PDF in Edge. The printed copy has no password. The downside is that printing rebuilds the document. Links, bookmarks and form fields are lost. If the file forbids printing, this route is blocked.
iPhone and iPad
Open the PDF in Files and enter the password. Tap Share > Print, spread two fingers on the page preview to open it as a PDF, then tap Share > Save to Files. The saved copy has no password. It is a printed copy, so form fields and links are gone.
Android

Should you remove the password from a bank statement?
Only from the copy you need to use, and only for as long as you need it. The lock protects the statement in places you do not control, such as email.
Statements are encrypted because email is not a secure channel. Messages sit in inboxes for years, get forwarded, and are exposed when an email account is compromised. A statement lists your name, address, account number, income and spending, which is most of what an identity thief wants.
When unlocking makes sense
Remove the password when a portal, accounting app or tax program cannot read encrypted files. Remove it also when the statement will live somewhere already protected, such as an encrypted drive or a password manager's file store. Other PDF jobs often need it as well: many services that merge, compress or run OCR refuse locked files.
A routine that limits exposure
Leave the locked originals in your email and shared folders. Unlock only the copy you are about to upload. Delete that copy once the upload is confirmed. If the unlocked version must be kept, store it outside synced folders that other people or devices can reach.
What about PDFs that open but will not print or copy?
Those files carry only a permissions password, also called an owner password. They open freely, but printing, copying text, editing or filling in fields is blocked.
The content of such a file decrypts without a password, which is why any reader can display it. The restrictions are flags that reader software agrees to follow. - “This PDF isn't password protected”: the file has no encryption. If an app still asks for a password, the PDF may be inside a protected ZIP, or the app is locking its own library.

- Signed documents: a certificate-based digital signature shows as invalid after the file is rewritten. Keep the locked original as the signed record.
